In this post I will show you how to use surveillance detection routes. Detecting surveillance is not an art or a skill but a craft. There are many different kinds but I will only be discussing foot surveillance for now.
Surveillance can be performed by anyone, but the more training a person has the more difficult it is to detect them. The most common types of people running surveillance are private investigators and governments. The problem with governments running surveillance is that it is extremely difficult to detect them when they use enough people.
To find out if you are being watched, you must run a surveillance detection route. This is a walking path that allows you to observe people who might be following you without drawing suspicion to yourself. Use reflective objects like window panes to note things like their build or the shoes they are wearing. It is also best to head indoors if you can, as this is a nightmare for surveillance teams.
One of the best surveillance detection methods is to find a large indoor area that has a lot of exits and wait patiently. The surveillance team will be forced to keep an eye on you or risk losing you. Observe anyone acting out of the ordinary. A person taking too long to look at clothing on a rack, someone who is not moving with the ebb and flow of the crowd.
The problem with government surveillance is that they can have enough people at their disposal that it is almost impossible to sort out which ones are bystanders and which ones are part of the surveillance team. It is better that you simply break out of the box of the surveillance team. An efficient way to do this is to enter an area of a building that is off limits to certain people. Another way is to break visual contact with the surveillance team in an area that has too many exits to be covered and then find a hiding spot.
Clothing choice is very important for surveillance work. The general rule is that you want to blend in to your target area. At a sporting event you want to wear clothing that represents the home team. At a formal dinner you want to wear dress clothes. When you don't have to wear a certain type of clothing, it is best to limit your color options to bland and dark types. Examples are gray, brown, black, navy blue, and dark green. Avoid yellow, blue, and red colors at all costs unless a lot of people in the target area are wearing the same thing. Wearing dark colored shoes is always recommended however.
Disguises can be used effectively to evade surveillance teams as well. It is best to have a place to change clothing, such as a bathroom or other secluded area. The main things you want to change for your disguise are your shoes, your jacket, and your face. For instance, if you walk into a bathroom with a black jacket, white tennis shoes and sunglasses, changing into a brown jacket with dark shoes and a hat is an efficient way to throw off the surveillance team.
More long term disguise options include altering your physical appearance. This includes dyeing your hair a radically different color (blonde to dark, vice versa), adding a beard using crepe hair and spirit gum, making yourself look fat or big, and changing your walking style.
Sometimes you get lucky with government surveillance as they don't have enough personnel to watch you. In this case it is extremely easy to pick them out using surveillance detection routes. You can run a "three sides of a box" route if this is the case. This routine involves traveling around three sides of an area instead of taking the direct route. In the diagram below, you can see that going from A to B to C to get to D is an illogical route and would indicate surveillance.
